I agree with Joe that animation (other than a color change) is not worth it,
I find it simply annoys the user. But if you're wondering how useful the
icons themselves can be think about toolbars in applications.

The best icons I've seen are small (16x16) and basically just change color
as you roll over them.  Some people may require a few additional pixels, but
I'd still aviod any more animation than a simple color change.
