I have a CGI program that writes PDF data to standard out after a header of

Content-type: application/pdf

followed by a blank line, followed by the PDF data. What the browser
(IE5.5) displays is the PDF text, i.e. it does not activate the Adobe
Acrobat plugin which *is* invoked if I poing the browser at a .pdf file.

If I view the source, the PDF data is correct; in fact, I can save the
viewed source as a .pdf, then open it with Adobe just fine. So it appears
I'm missing something in the Content-type. Has anyone done this?
