One last note in follow-up of my last post. Another thing that I believe happens in the industry is that our (meaning all of ours) management attend "executive briefings" or trade shows where vendors like IBM show off their latest hardware and software. Even if they had an iSeries on display, they'd either be showing it unplugged, or they'd be showing it running Domino or some other fancy app. What they won't be showing is an iSeries running "backoffice" apps which is what probably 90% of the iSeries's are doing. Ever been to Costco, Home Depot, or Linen's N' Things? These companies have green screens or green screen 'wrappers' running their businesses right in the stores. So management returns from one of these events all pumped up with visions of fancy new hardware and fancy new software or technology then turns and looks to see a blakc and green screen with a blinking cursor. It doesn't matter what the screen does, what does is that it's not "high tech" and I think at least in my shop, this is part of the problem. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Michael Skvarenina" <mskvarenina@usa.net> To: <web400@midrange.com> Sent: Wednesday, April 03, 2002 12:05 PM Subject: Re: [WEB400] Beyond RPG CGI > This is a multi-part message in MIME format. > -- > [ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] > Very well said Nathan. I too am a fanatic of the iSeries and OS/400. And speaking of the iSeries being the "secret weapon", I wrote an email to Lou Gerstner several months ago calling the iSeries IBMs "Hidden secret". This is what I wrote: > > Lou, please before you retire, take a serious look at the iSeries line. The problem isn't the iSeries....it can meet just about any computing need...the problem is lack of marketing. iSeries revenue is due totally to few software vendors that still have products running on the iSeries, and by customers like myself who spent $XXX,XXXX on a new box just last year. I can tell you next time around, it won't be the iSeries I'll be looking at if it continues to lose market share because I'll be afraid that a)I can't find qualified developers for the box, and b)IBM may pull the plug on supporting the box due to low revenue. > > Lou....this really is, or can be your cash cow. Let's unveil IBM's hidden secret! > > > Within days I heard from Buell Duncan (iSeries General Manager for those who don't know him) and we ended up in communication for quite some time over my situation. Buell offered help including an inviation to Rochester for my management and I to discuss iSeries futures and directions. (We didn't go...yet) > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Nathan M.
