Our company is doing something very similar. We have eRPG apps written that run like a top, but we are trying to move in the direction of interface separation from business logic. In doing so we are planning to use RPG on the backend to do all of the business logic in modules. We are also planning on writing RPG modules to do all of our data access. Now we can build a front end with anything we want (eRPG-cgidev2, ASP, JSP, net.yuck, etc)and the person building it doesn't really have to know a lot about the backend business logic, they just need to know which modules to call. There are many tools to get the job done. If your shop is doing good at eRPG and the CGIDEV2 stuff, then I would suggest you stay that way. But if you have some people willing to learn some thing new, like Java Servlets, then I say give it a try. You had better put a lot more research and learning into the budget though(IMO). The switch from RPG to Java is a bear if you haven't had any previous OO type languages;-) Aaron Bartell -----Original Message----- From: Mike Skvarenina [mailto:mskvarenina@usa.net] Sent: Friday, March 29, 2002 8:45 AM To: web400@midrange.com Subject: [WEB400] Beyond RPG CGI This is a multi-part message in MIME format. -- [ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] I hope this isn't a mistake to ask this (fearing many different answers and opinions) but here it goes: My shop has been doing RPG CGI development for about a year now. We started off with Brad Stone's book to get our feet wet then discovered CGIDEV2 which made the development process very simple. Management however, although very impressed with our browser interfaces (they hated the green screen dubbing it "old technology"), still believes RPG is dead and is insistant we move away from RPG in general...even if it can 'work the web'. So my question is, what is your shop doing beyond RPG CGI? One area I am seriously considering is firing up our WebSphere server and learning to use it and Java. If this is the right direction, what's the best way for a staff of RPG programmers to get started? _______________________________________________ This is the Web Enabling the AS400 / iSeries (WEB400) mailing list To post a message email: WEB400@midrange.com To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, visit: http://lists.midrange.com/cgi-bin/listinfo/web400 or email: WEB400-request@midrange.com Before posting, please take a moment to review the archives at http://archive.midrange.com/web400.
