Hi Damien,

Instead of a Linux install, I'd prefer the IDEA of including a "Bring your own Eclipse" version so users could install native on Linux in their own Eclipse installs.

We need to keep the quick unzip installs with the Eclipse and JVM for Windows and macOS.

I would vote for RDi as a 100% Java Eclipse plugin - then we wouldn't have the platform problems, and could install it in every Eclipse installation which is supported. Including Raspberry Pi or else.

And this solution would also be much more Eclipse Version-independent than what we have right now.

So that would be my take for RDi 10.

But personally I don't know how much future is in RDi. I was at POW3R conference some weeks ago, and really ALL vendors and customers are full-speed-ahead to VSCode and Code for i.

I have seen a RPG Outliner for VSCode (thanks to Markus Litters) that blows RDi out of the water as it has much more features (like clicking on a procedure prototype and jumping into the service program source an that exact position).

Also all AI code assistant projects I have seen, are VSCode only right now.

So we might have to see, what the future holds for our beloved IDE.

Surprisingly, version 9.8 is usable with ubuntu 24 + Wine 9 ( windows
on linux basic compatibility layer ) A bit slow but usable.
The only annoying thing is tooltips on menus/fields.
The tooltip is correctly displayed but never disappears, until another tooltip is displayed.
And they grab the keyboard focus, if the mouse cursor is on the field.
It is a wine problem, and there is no way to disable tooltips on eclipse it seems.

I can live with that, I understand Linux + wine + RDI it is a
completely unsupported environment :-)

In order to push for a future return of linux support, I will submit
an idea on IBM power portal

Hi Damien,

I'd suggest evaluating virtualbox + windows + 9.8 for the time being.

Our team is starting 9.9 to run on Eclipse 4.31 and Java 17. The suppliers do NOT currently include Linux support. It's unclear if a later release will.

Hello Eric,

Thanks for keeping RDI in sync with latest TR enhancements !
Is there a linux version coming with this fixpack ?
We have three licences on ubuntu, so we stick to 9.6 version, but we still pay maintenance with the hope to have an update for our OS.

To be fair, I use RDI 9.8 with linux+wine , it works but it is slow with a lot of glitches Our dev application environment will stay on linux. Would you advise us to start evaluating using virtualbox + windows + 9.8 ?
Or wait for a future native version ?
