Daniel has provided a very comprehensive response to your query.

In addition, I would strongly encourage you copy, (or Export 
Configuration) your existing (9.6) Workspace before installing 9.8. When 
you fire up 9.8, point it to the copied Workspace (or Import 
Configuration) - always have a backup, just in case!

(I have a problem with migrated Workspaces - the "X" (CLOSE) disappears 
from all of the Views. This may be due to Eclipse and my use of 
iProjects. I have had to create new Workspaces for 9.8 and set up the 
Connections, Filters, etc. again from scratch. I've not been able to 
resolve the issue, but I'm not aware of anyone else experiencing this 
problem.)

Otherwise, 9.6 and 9.8 run quite happily in parallel, (on different 
Workspaces). (The installed images should be in different directories.)
