As far as I know, that is the only way to get overtype in VS Code on
any platform. On Windows, I think it comes preconfigured to allow the
Insert key to toggle insert mode (as you would in any other
application that allows toggling between insert and overtype). I
certainly don't recall having to change my settings. I am not familiar
with the "usual" way to do it on a Mac; it may already come configured
to accommodate it, but at worst you can always set whatever
keybinding(s) you like.
