Hi Vern,

I released iSphere 4.2.4.b001 with a new renaming rule "Numerical Extended". This rule is mmuch more powerful than the existing "Numerical" rule. Feel free to give it a try. Check the help text to get an overview of its options.

Regards,

Thomas.

Yes, Thomas, that is yours - and I see the option to rename something that is already on the destination - very nice - I did run into the "too long" issue, the message was displayed. I do wonder if an option could be selected to replace part of the name, instead of adding the number - that has potential problems, of course.

Thanks
Vern

The iSphere Copy Members option has been released with iSphere 2.8.0 back in December 2015. That makes makes it possible, that you remember that option. I do not know any other way to copy and rename members.

Thomas, in recent RDi there is a copy members tool - is it yours? I've been able, I believe, to copy a source member somewhere with a different name.

I look forward to seeing the one from iSphere, of course.

Cheers

Hi Daniel,

do not to forget to test the renaming option carefully before using it. Of course I tested it forth and back, but you never know.

Hi Thomas,

this is great news - I have to work with a code base on two systems right now, and I „constantly“ have to copy sources back and forth - and this will be a real time saver, because I don’t have to worry about overwriting any changes.

Thanks, I will install it on Thursday, as soon as I‘m starting to work.

Regards,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

iSphere 4.2.3 is available, now. It comes with the new "Rename" members option for renaming existing members when copying members.

For your information, the delimiter is not optional, because without a delimiter it is hard to guess, what the base name is and what the backup extension.

Thomas.

Hi Thomas,
yes - thus „auto rename“ feature would be slow - therefore it should only be an option - not the default.
The suffix should bei configurable - first a constant separator like „_“, „.“, „$“ or „#“ (and the option to have no separator) - and next a 1 char suffix which should be incremented if already used.
And yes, the checking has to be done during the copy/rename process.

Hi Daniel,

An "auto-rename" feature when copying members would be great to have. The main problem (you already mentioned it) is to find a "free" name. It is easy to say:

* add a suffix
* shorten the name when too long

But what could be the exact rules for it? Should these rules be editable?

The next problem is that each new name has to be checked for duplicates, which may take significant time. For example, when you add a number to the end of the name, that name may already exist. Of course you can increment the number, but the name has to be checked again.

Regards,

Thomas.

Betreff: [WDSCI-L] iSphere Copy Member Dialog

Hi,

I have a question for the iSphere plugin developers.

First - iSphere is great, and it saves me a lot of time every days.

But would it be possible, to add a feature to the Copy Members dialog?

If copying members that exist in the target library, it would be
great to have a feature, that

if the target member exists, it does rename the target members by some scheme?

Maybe a selection like „Replace existing members“ - but like „Rename existing members“. The renaming could be with a suffix (e.g. „MEMBER“ -> „MEMBER.1“) and if the original member name is to long, shorten it, to hold the suffix.

This would be a great addition to this nearly perfect feature.

I would try and/or help to implement this myself, but I would need some „quick start developing iSphere tutorial“, because I’ve never done Eclipse plugin development.

Thanks and kind regards,
Daniel
