Alan, have you checked out the IBM videos on YouTube? These might help get to grips with the Screen and Report Designer tools.

Also, an excellent tip that Susan offered many years ago. Don't use the (default) Design Perspective - it's not an optimal layout. You're better off building your own custom Perspective that encompasses all the Design/Edit/Compile steps.
