Steve

I never use the Object Table - never really needed that, and the various "table" views didn't seem useful enough for me - I might have to take a look further. But I think the RSE tree also could have a "Copy to...".

Most of my work comes through a CMS, anyhow, so even RSE isn't my first place to work on things.

Thanks
Vern

Vern,

You can use the option 3 from the Object Table today. You don't need to be in the PDM Perspective to use the option, it's on the right click (or shift-f10) menu (PDM Options > 3 - Copy to) today even if you have the Options turned off on the Object Table view. We are looking at making this copy easier for multiple members, and our direction is to simplify ALL command actions, but still allow for the current full command prompt.

Example: Today if you use the "3 - Copy to" from the PDM Options popup menu, you need to select a location, then we prompt the full CPYSRCF command. Our goal is to add a simple interface that lets you override "most common" items quickly (ie the name, file, library) and press [OK]. But still allow a [Advanced] Button to let you select the old fully prompted command.

If you're not using the quick filters panel of Object Table view, you're missing out. The response is faster than RSE and for single library filters, it much easier to use. You can quickly create single library filters for RSE by naming them as well, so for most it's faster to create Member/Object/Library filters using Quick Filters.

But you can also use the filters WITHOUT needing to save them. Type in a pattern in the Member: field like AHE* and press enter, your list is displayed. Or keep it * for all members, and use the Subset tab on the quick filters to update the list live while you type. If you want to keep your filter, scroll down to the Named Filter: field and give your quick filter a name to use it on RSE.

Most of your PDM member options are present and work from a right-click popup menu (or shift-f10)

There is a Button on the Object Table button bar to hide/display the Quick Filters panel, and one to move it to the left or right.

BTW, I just verified that there is NO Save As in RSE - only copy-paste - that makes a little sense in the design, since "Save as" is not an IBM i concept as such.

"Copy" in RSE, however, is not the same as option 3 in PDM - "Copy" in RSE actually uses the Windows, etc., paradigm - with option 3 in PDM you get a dialog - you don't get that dialog until you "Paste" the member into the source file in RSE.

Steve, does the PDM perspective y'all put together give you the same function as option 3? That'd make that perspective useful for this kind of thing.

Cheers

Lock on startup would mark files Browse if someone else has a lock. Just like if I tried to edit a member you have locked, but if it happens on an Edit request we prompt the user for killing the locked job, or opening in Browse, but on startup you would never want to end the other locks.

Also if you open all of your files as Browse, we don't establish a lock either until you toggle it to Edit.

Save as or Copy should allow a user to make a copy with a connection regardless of having a lock. I have co-workers who creates a member, ctl-a to select all and copy then paste to get around this defect. Seems to me a Save As or Copy should always allow the user to determine local or remote copy.

There is a related RFE
https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/rfe/execute?use_case=viewRfe&CR_ID=
12499 which is for "Lock Source Opened at Startup of RDi". This would
relock members when RDi is reopened.

I did some testing on this this morning to verify Vern's findings.

When a member is initially opened in RDi, then Save As is performed, the QSYSSaveAsDialog is shown, which will save the member to IBM i.

However, if RDi is closed with that member open, then re-opened, the Save As uses the org.eclipse.ui.ide.save dialog.
And that dialog shows that the member will be saved to the local system's remoteSystemTempFiles location.
Presumably because when RDi starts, it opens the member from the local system's remoteSystemTempFiles location. The 'connection' between the opened member and the IBM i is lost.

So what is needed would be an option to present the QSYSSaveAsDialog for objects opened from the remoteSystemTempFile location.

Hmm, if you have closed and re-opened RDI then I suspect that to be
different from just opening a source member in a connected session.
That is when you close RDI the lock on the source member is released.
This won't be re-acquired until you do a save or something with the
edit session. So on re-open of RDI the edit window is just reloaded
from the local source so it is essentially a local file on your PC.
As a result
the
dialog presented when you do a SaveAs will likely be different?

Yeah Michael - only one connection - well, I use connections to 3
LPARs, all in the same workspace.

My goal was to make a copy of an existing source member with a
different name in the same source file. The original had been left
open over several shutdowns and restarts over several days. If I
create and save a new member, then do a save as from the file menu,
it does give me the library list and the source file that it came
from -- so that feels different.

There is some odd-ball behaviour with this Vern. Sometimes it
works and sometimes it only offers a local target. I've never
formally reported it as I can't get it to repeat consistently.

Y'all

I have tried from time to time to save a source member as a
different name, and using the Save as... menu item.
This must be saving only to the local workspace, because it
doesn't seem to add a member on the IBM i.
I must have missed something, as this wasn't my expectation. So
what do we have to do? Go to RSE and make a copy, then open that up
to
edit?
This feels clumsy - I'm curious what else I've missed in this
process.

Nothing solid here, but could it be the connection it's using.
(That's assuming you have multiple connections.)
