The customers asking the most questions ARE on this list, which is why they
asked me to ask the questions!

Thanks for your response.

Subject: Re: [WDSCI-L] Last "Stable Release" of RDI

Hi Jim

I have been using the latest - 9.6.0.3 - for several weeks and have no
issues for the work I do. I would say that for standard RPG (not SQL) it is
very reliable. There was a memory leak with 9.6.0.2, that was fixed in
9.6.0.3 - So I'd say stay at 1 or go to 3.

I've had some curious behavior at times with embedded SQL - details I don't
remember right now, as I've not had them for awhile - one was, I think, if
there were an error in the SQL syntax, it could affect indentation and all
of code following it - weird stuff!

I don't use projects, and I think a number of folks here do - so I can't
speak to that. We have TurnOver here, and I use their plugin all the time -
it works great in RDi. I also use iSphere, especially its search tool - very
good stuff.

On Q2 - I'm inclined to think that some of the issues, strongly voiced, as
might should be, are limited to very few cases. Nonetheless, it helps for
IBM to hear about these. And even if only mentioned by 1 person, there could
be others, who are maybe not saying anything because it's already been said,
or for whatever reason. Argument from silence isn't very (heh) valid.

As for Q3 - I'm not sure this group is so much bleeding edge as it just is
here - and we have learned that the RDi team do watch this list. So I think
that the developers at your customers could do much worse than to subscribe
here and bring issues to this list, if allowed, that is. I guess I have a
higher comfort level because of these lists.

And I would like to see an easier way to submit PMRs to IBM - in our case,
we as developers cannot directly go to IBM and submit a problem - it'd have
to go through our system administrator. Those purchasing through Passport
Advantage might have it easier, I don't know.

Going to the release that works with the latest features of RPG might be a
reason to go there - 9.6.0.1 might be that 1, not sure there, but that'd be
another question I might ask.

OK, back to my RDi playground!!

Cheers
Vern

Jim,

Yes, it is stable, but not 100% stable like the IBM i. <sadly>

As usually, we all run into minor quirks, that can cause me to think I
am losing my mind. So things work great in older version, but for some
strange reason, no longer work in the current version. Happens ALL THE
TIME!
Normally, minor, but still extremely FRUSTRATING!

Oh well, if you encounter problems; try these recovery procedures, as
I have to do from time to time...

1.) Try-Restarting RDI. It does fix some problems.
2.) Try clearing the cache and then Restarting
3.) Try restarting RDI with the "-clean" option
4.) Try creating a new workspace.

My biggest problem has always been that the outline view is not 100%
trust worthy. Often I have to clear the cache, and do a manually
re-load which takes time. I find myself going to the compile listing,
because I can COUNT ON THAT EVERYTIME!

What good is an outline view that is not 100% accurate EVERYTIME? Just
saying... <frown> But, still Pretty darn good!

Subject: [WDSCI-L] Last "Stable Release" of RDI

I have customers asking me a simple question I don't really have a
good answer for: "What is the latest release of RDi that is stable
enough for my development group?

We know IBM works really hard to improve the quality and functionality
of RDi, I'm not questioning those efforts, but it feels like the
reality is falling short of the desire.

I know IBM would like to think the latest is stable but many of my
customers are not quite convinced to keep up the latest code. They
won't ask the question since it identifies them, so they ask me to,
and being me, I have no problem asking.

I'll follow with a second question that might be more relevant: Are
the issues identified on this list partly due to environment (desktop
computer) or style of use, as opposed to the base code of the product?
If so what are the recommended minimums as opposed to the published
minimums.

A third important question: is this group the leading edge so
therefore more likely to find issues than most development shops,
therefore it's not a representative sample?

I use RDi almost daily but it's not the focus of my endeavors so I
don't keep up as quickly as you folks, nor do I push it as far as you do.
