But I routinely use Python to modify or generate RPG source.

I'm not sure I really understand the "just inject new lines before and
after". I already mentioned breaking at appropriate places and
inserting line continuation characters. The whole idea (well, *my*
whole idea) of using a "full blown scripting language" is that we're
working directly with source PF members. We're not working with stream
files at all, but with database tables whose columns are SRCSEQ,
SRCDAT, and SRCDTA. (And yeah, I like to update the SRCDAT of affected
rows.)
