Others have hinted at this - it seems that you got the wrong type of license - or at least not the one that Jon is talking about - there is a fixed-term license that you pay for every year - that sounds like yours. Initial cost is less and is the price IBM advertises online.

The authorized user license, you pay the initial price once, then it's maintenance in the 20-25% area.

If you are buying it for yourself, I suggest getting it through Passport Advantage. I think! That makes it your personal license.

There is, for IBM i customers, still a trade-up to RDi if you have ADTS - when the list price for an AU license was around $1100 this price we paid was less than $800 a seat, as I recall. Maintenance is still based on list price. And the trade-up is available through Passport Advantage, if your company wants to go that route - one nice thing about it, PA notifies you when maintenance needs to be renewed, IIRC - IBM doesn't - your BP has to be on the ball.

So the price was low for P05 systems and affordable. With the current pricing by IBM, I am at an extreme cost disadvantage at a cost of $1,000 per year plus per seat. This is the same cost as the big systems pay.

Everyone and IBM wonder why nobody wants to pay for RDI especially small shops and individuals. Students coming out of college cannot afford to gain entry to the IBM i space.....

Microsoft has the visual studio that anyone can download and use. It does not have all the functionality but you can begin developing at a low cost.

RDi needs a similar offering. To grow the system, you need the college kids have free/cheap access to the IBM i.
