Thanks Thomas...

Guess I should have looked harder at your message...instead of just
clicking away like a user!

Charles,

Feel free to download beta 2.9.4.b002 from here to give it a try:

http://www.tools400.de/Downloads/Freeware/Beta/iSphere for RDi 8.0+
(v2.9.4.b002 Update Site).zip

I am not quite happy with that "special" search mode under the cover.
Most Likely I will add a third radio button "Message IDs" next to the
"Match*" buttons. That should make it more clear, I assume.

But for now, it should work for you.

Please notice that you need to update the library to use the new search
mode. If you do not update the library, searching for message
descriptions still works, but without the new search mode.

Thomas.

Charles,

You nailed it. Indeed that is how "Include message ID" works. But I
changed it today, to match your needs, because I like the idea.
Sometimes I have an IBM i message ID but do not know the message file
for looking at the help text. That is when I could use a message lookup
option.

That is from the iSphere help. It exlains (hopefully) how "Include
message ID" works, now:

<quote>
Note: The "Include message id" option can be used to search for
specific
message IDs. Searching for specific message IDs is very fast, because
it
only checks the message file(s) for the specified message IDs. It does
not search for a given string.

The special "Search for specific message IDs" mode is automatically
selected, when you select "Include message id" and leave all other
options unchecked. In addition all search arguments must specify
"contains" and must have a length of 7 characters.
</quote>

Let me know, if the help text is unclear or bad English and I am going
to change it.

Regards,

Thomas.

Although...

I'm not sure "include message ID" is quite what I want. As that
implies
that the tool will still search the msg description and msg ID of
every
msg
in the entire file.

That's going to take some time as I'm dealing with huge message files
(almost 4GB)

What I'm really after is a "lookup by msg ID". Something that will
return
as quickly as DSPMSGD does.

Thanks again!

Charles,

It is really not a big deal to add a "Include message ID" checkbox
to
the
"iSphere Message File Search" box. The problem is that I have to
change the
library (service program XFNDSTR) for that "minor" enhancement that.

Eventually I decided to add that option but do not enforce updating
the
library. The "minor" disadvantage is, that users see the new option,
but it
does not have any effect, as long as they do not update the library.

The "Include message id" will be available with the next beta
version.

Betreff: [WDSCI-L] iSphere - Message file tools

I've got a message file filter defined RSE...

All I really want to do is to be able to look at a particular
message
by
message ID. Basically, I'm looking for a DSPMSGD with the message
file
already filled in.

Expanding the *MSGF takes too long.

And the iSphere "message file search" looks at the message text, I
can't
serach by ID.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!
Charles
