Solved!

Just for the record - it appears that IM is unable to tell you that the repository requires a higher level of IM than the one you are using.

It was an almost new install of IM so I didn’t check before starting. After the failures I decided to have IM check for updates and sure enough there was one.

Had IM update itself and magically the invisible, unreachable repository appeared!

Dear IBM - could IM’s error reporting be improved just a teeny bit? I shouldn’t have to guess if IM updates are needed or not - surely it could have told me!
