Hi Don,

To illustrate the error - find or create a source file in a library which
isn't yet associated with an iProject.

From RSE right-click and select "make available offline"

In iProjects right-click the project that got auto- created (
system-library ) and select "properties"

On the resource page on my system it shows Text File Encoding as "inherited
from container (Cp1252)

If you edit a source member in iProjects and then on a comment line, press
Esc to go to the command line and type "set hex 82" and press enter, it
will insert that character in your source.

if you Esc back to the source you can press Shift-Alt-h to view the line in
hex and you should see that in Source encoding it is hex 22 which is
highlight ( or colour white, I forget )

Having inserted that character if you hit Ctrl-s to save, you get the error
"Save could not be completed..."

To get around this, I created the iProject in advance of using the "make
available offline" and changed that Text File encoding to ISO-8859-1

I also note that if you don't do this, any existing unsupported characters
seem to get "silently" converted. On my system they became Unicode 003f and
showed in the source as question marks.

Best regards,
Craig

Craig, I do not know where to find the setting you ask about. However, we
work with iProjects extensively in my shop and I dont recall encountering
any issues with saving a member when working off line in an iProject. The
only error I know of that I have received has been if I dont select the
option to work offline. It would be helpful to know the error that you
encountered.

Thanks all for the helpful replies. Sorry, but answering all the emails
the other day put me out for two days with a backache. I go to PT today
to
try to work it out. <painful grimace>

This was an enlightening experience, as usual. So many solutions and the
ultimate answer to my original question.

First off, despite working on the AS400 since the first year it was
available to the general non-partner public, I will readily admit that I
don't know but the smallest of percentage of what is available, I'm sure,
although I don't know what I don't know, so that is not a valid
admittance. But I do realize that somebody out there may know the answer
and obviously with groups like this one, the answer can be found.

Second, my original idea was that I would be able to do something with
one
step and I asked it without completely thinking it through. I do that
often enough, and sometimes later regret it. I don't this time because
reading all the responses has been enlightening, as well as fun.

Third, I like a challenge. I may embark on a quest to "fill the gap". I
understand that RDi is a developer's tool, but as a tool, it's function
is
to take source on the i and transfer that to the PC and then put it back
all for the convenience of eliminating the need for the developer to have
to go through the steps himself. What I'm proposing doesn't seem too
large
a step from that. But there are a few factors in there that I don't
understand fully and many APIs and tools that I've yet to come across.
Too
many times in the past I've developed something that was already there
and
didn't find out about it because I didn't ask the right persons.

Until someone enhances the existing tools to do what I want, I'll
continue
to use that which is comfortable to me and try to learn other methods
that
turn out to be easier. I hope to always be willing to learn new stuff.

Thanks again, all. Really great stuff you've passed on.

The fees for each user for just this one application might make RDi an
expensive solution?

subject: [WDSCI-L] iProjects - Text File Encoding

Hi All,

Following on from my recent foray into RDi plugins, where I wrote a
plugin
that ( amongst other things ) allowed me to insert the beginnings of a
highlighted comment ( double slash followed by CCSID 37 x'22' {=Unicode
0082} to allow me to continue to define comments which would stand out
for
the bulk of programmers where I work who still use STRSEU...

I noticed that if I was working offline in an iProject, if I insert
character I get an error when I try to save the member ( locally ) I'm
assuming that there is no translation from x'22' in CCSID37 to the
default
text file encoding for the project which is 1252.

Looking at the iProject Properties I can see under Resource that the Text
File Encoding is set to "Inherited from Container Cp1252 )

Well, I'm not exactly sure what the container is in this case...
I can change the encoding here to ISO-8859-1 and that then allows me to
save the member once I have inserted the above character.

"Query Hex" shows the character as 0082 which is correct.
Hex view, with it's 3 views shows:
Unicode 0082,
Source Encoding Cp037 22
But continues to show Native Encoding 1252 3F.

I guess that view is hard-wired to 1252 and doesn't update to reflect any
changes to text file encoding.

Anyway, my question is - is there anywhere at a higher level that I can
set
this up to use ISO-8859-1 which can handle the character?

If you auto-create an iProject, as happens when you select one or more
source files from RSE and say "make available offline" then the source
members will be downloaded and that particular character modified before
you have a chance to say you want the local text files in ISO-8859-1 and
not Cp1252.

Sorry I'm kinda new to iProjects.

Thanks kindly,
Craig
