I have a colleague who is getting prompted to upgrade to a newer

Should we be skittish about going ahead, and getting on the new Java
release? What Java level is considered compatible with our RDi
version?

RDi ships with it's own copy of Java (IBM's J9 implementation), so
upgrading an installed copy of Oracle Java is fine.
