An alternative to this workflow that I use frequently is this (alt+j not required):

Cursor to line to be joined to
End to get to end of line
SHIFT+CTRL+CMD+LEFT ARROW
SHIFT+CTRL+CMD+RIGHT ARROW
press space bar

I am on a Mac, hence the CMD key above. Another programmer here is on Windows and can accomplish the same thing using the WINDOWS key in place of the CMD keys above.

Then I stumbled upon action oneSpace. Until we get this RFE fulfilled,
oneSpace may help those circumstances where there are many spaces to delete.
