Fine, this suggests RDi trimmed upon save.

I was trying to hurry along to the SEU part. Your conclusion that
Code/400 is trimming upon open is a better inference to make. It's
the *only* inference to make if you've directly opened a source PF
member. If you are dealing in IFS stream files, then RDi *could* be
meaningfully trimming upon save (using the option you mentioned
earlier). But then, with IFS stream files, I think SEU is not even
applicable. (If it works with stream files, that's news to me.)

But it underscores the idea that you also have to be careful when
talking about files. Not only is there stream vs. physical, there is
also disk versus memory. (In the case of memory, the term usually
employed in the vernacular of editors is "buffer".)
