I completely agree with you. I do RPG and Java development and the differences between both editors are huge. For me the most annoying points are:
* search and replace (the CTRL-F and tab order problem)
* selecting text with a mouse double click
* selecting text with SHIFT-RIGHT / SHIFT-LEFT
* indenting text (text blocks) with the TAB key
I really do not understand why a so called "Integrated Development Environment" (IDE) cannot have the editors working the same for the basic editor operations. What is the "eclipse" LPEX editor profile for?
I assume the heart of the problem is that the guys who develop RDi do not develop RPG applications with RDi. The Eclipse guys use Eclipse for developing Eclipse. Hence they immediately see what works and what needs to be improved. Most likely that is not the case for the RDi people.
For example, see the new "Mark Occurrences" feature. I really like it and I am happy that it is there. But:
* why does it not work the same as in Java
In Java you do not need to select an item. It is enough to put the cursor on it.
In Java only the method name is highlighted. In RPG the procedure name and the parameters are highlighted which I find confusing and which is quite ugly when the procedure call spans multiple lines.
Last but not least did you already try to select characters of a highlighted item? The selected characters and the cursor turn to white while the background color stays green. That is really hard to see, at least for my eyes. In Java the selected characters turn to white as well but the background color changes to dark blue. That is easy to see. The "Mark Occurrences" feature is always OFF when I restart RDi. Why???
These points are just my two cents that make me feel that the RDi developers do not use RDi for RPG development and that they do not get enough feedback from the people testing a new version of RDi.
Sorry Edmund, that may sound quite harsh to you. But it is not that I want to blame the RDi developers. I really like RDi and I honor the work you and your colleagues do. But I wished, the LPEX editor was closer to the Java editor and to all the other editors on the planet. It would make the life of RPG/Java developers at lot easier. I also understand (at least assume) that RDi is developed by pure Java specialists. But for the editor and for new "Java like features" it should not be so hard to make them work the same, isn't it?
Regards,
Thomas.
