Buck,

Okay, using NotePad++, you can create your own custom language coloring schema! For instance I created one for ILERPG...
http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/notepad-plus/index.php?title=User_Defined_Languages

1.) For Literals that are in Quotes, I show as RED with light Green Background.
2.) For Op-Codes, I show them in BLUE
3.) For Compiler Directives, I show them in PINK
4.) for Reserved words that begin with an "*" Asterisk, like *ALL, *blanks, *ZEROS, *ALTSEQ, I show in light Blue
5.) For %BIF, I show them in Light Blue
6.) Comment like /* */ & // I show in Light Green
7.) Numeric, I show in RED. The number "0" vs. the Letter "O"
8.) Special Characters: #$&():;+<=>, I show in RED

So, after opening up the source in Rational Developer. If needed, which I HATE, I manually update the PC Text File in NotePad++. Normally, this is only done with the Dreaded Quote for LITERAL strings... <frown>

After going back to RDP, which says the source changed, and asks if I want to refresh....
And I reply yes. And the source is UPDATED outside of Rational Developer. <Big Frown>

So, I don't Cut & Paste into NotePad++, but rather open the downloaded source to edit. I would MUCH rather edit inside of LPEX, rather than have to resort to using NotePad++. Other have used iProjects, and then open it up with a Text Editor. That also works!

I remember a LONG TIME ago, going NUTS using OPNQRYF, and matching up those @#$@!#$ DARN QUOTES!! <Frustration!> And then someone showed me to use a programmer editor to line up the quotes! That is when I first fell in love in color syntax Editors. Of course I haven't used OPNQRYF in about 20-years! <LOL>

Check my photo album for details...

NOTE: I tried to put a length description on each picture to explain. Hope my comments are NOT misinterpreted... <grin>

If at all possible, I would PREFER to stay inside Rational Developer for my editing. Instead of resorting to outside tools. Rational Developer has come a long ways, but it has room for plenty of minor tweaks to greatly improve it!

Thanks to the all the Rational Developer Team for all their hard work! I think I got another person at work to actually load up Rational Developer! I am trying to win them over one by one! <Big Grin>

Why is that I can format string Literals inside of CLLE, but not inside RPGLE?
I am talking about this preference:
Windows>Preference>Lpex Editor>parsers>parser Styles

CL has "Literals" for color formatting...
While RPG, ILERPG & ILERPGSQL does not have the option for "Literals"...
I would think there might be RFE. If there is one, I would certainly vote for that!

Add one! I never thought about this before. It's interesting that the RPG parser doesn't seem to tokenise things the way the compiler does.
The potentially applicable tokens (styles) are User Symbol, User Symbol2 and Layout Space. Nothing there specifically for literals.

I am stuck using good old NotePad++ to edit my complex literal statements.

This might be off-topic but I don't follow this. I use Notepad++ a lot but I can't think of a reason to copy literals out of RDI into
Notepad++, edit them and then copy back. Could you share the workflow
scenario you're encountering?
