Hi Mark,
I assume that what is going on here, is that the 335 nodes are paragraphs
and the 1098 connections are calls to those paragraphs. With that much
going on, it is understandable why you would want some tooling to help you.
As Eric said, you can use the graphical outline view to help zoom in and
out of the diagram. Hopefully, you can find points where you can partition
the paragraphs into smaller modules.

Hi Eric,

This was done on just a single COBOL source member but this program
controls 5 screens and does a huge amount of record processing too. Hence
why we need to redevelop it into a number of smaller, more maintainable
programs. I am just struggling to understand the current functionality.

At a high-level, nodes would be something that is 'callable' and
connections are 'calls'. In the Outline, there is a overview of the view
which lets you zoom in on a section.

Did you do this on a program object? Have you tried a single COBOL source
member?

Hi Edmund,

Thanks for taking an interest.

I have generated an Application Diagram for the program in question but
when I expand the internal structure of the program (as opposed to the
external references) I get a message saying the source contains 335 nodes
(whatever a node is) and 1098 connections (whatever they are). When I allow
it to continue I get this massive, completely unreadable, structure that I
have not found a way of simplifying so I can actually try to use it.

Do you have any links to demos or tutorials for this aspect of RDi?

Thanks for finding the time to reply to this.

Do you know if there are any plans to make it available? I am going to be
embarking on a complete rewrite of one of our most complicated programs and
any tools I can find to help me understand to current functionality would
be very helpful.

If anyone else knows of any Cobol tools that aid the
visualisation/navigation of massive Cobol programs I'd appreciate a heads
up.

When the enhancement was done for the COBOL Outline view in 8.5.1, it
was
done by refactoring some of the AIX COBOL tools to work for IBM i as
well.
Clearly there are some plugin dependencies that are bringing in this
view
as well. Currently this view is not usable for IBM i.

Perform
Hierarchy but can't work out how to use it.
