... or if you try something like setting a SEP then launching the program
in "Normal" mode from the Commands Log so that it is run in the same job
that is servicing the RDP workspace.

The only way I have managed a hard lockup in 8.5 so far is when I
mistakenly set an SEP on a program that gets called by RDP as part
of our custom compile programs. Not too surprisingly, RDP does not
like trying to debug itself.
