The one piece of advice I can offer is, when in doubt do not close WDSc normally.

This works on XP:
Use Task Manager and do an End Task against WDSc. When you get the exit confirmation for WDSc, click Cancel. You will get an End Program dialog, click End Now.


That will not fix the cause, but should contain the damage. By default WDSc saves the workbench on exit. This should bypass that save so you can restart from the prior workbench.
