It does seem likely Joe - but the port numbers shown by Netstat are nowhere close to the range shown in that document. The numbers I'm seeing are (from memory so may not be exact) in the 2145, 2146 range.
Class is over now and for the students it is not a problem so I guess I'll wait until I see that lab guys at the TUG meeting later this month and see what they can tell me.
We did have some problems with one of the students (they need Qshell because they are using Lawson) and the error reporting is virtually non-existent. It must have logs somewhere but ...
Thanks to you and everyone for the many helpful suggestions etc. I had problems responding because I could only use web mail while on the client site and even that was "iffy".
