The naming is a server-implemented property of the JDBC connection. It is just a name-value pair passed as part of the connection url. This is also used for setting date formats, library lists, maxima, minima, cursor sensitivity, commitment/isolation level...

This is a must-have document if you intend to connect using JDBC and you want your connection to emulate your STRSQL session. For example, make sure you set your date format and libraries correctly or your SQL will not run as you may think.
