No, the original design was for offline work. The idea was that developers who spent significant time disconnected, say on planes and such, could download complete working environments where they could write code and and basically bench-check it and then later upload it to the server for actual compilation and testing.

Phil Coulthard was the driving force behind projects and that was his vision. It never really took off, and as we become ever more connected (WiFi in every hotel room, and even in the air!) the need for a disconnected development environment dwindles.

The use of projects as an interface to SCM is actually a serendipitous side effect.

I've never seen good use for projects on their own - I believe they are
there for SCM developers to take advantage of, and I'm aware of some
that do.

Looked at them once, never went back. What am I missing?
