Shipped media is exactly what I have been using.
In fact, I had trouble with my Java programs recognizing the provided JVM. I
had to add my own JVM to get the programs to compile.
How about the 8.0? I have the RAD 8.0 , and have just ordered the RDP 8.0 on
media. Should I go with downloads instead of the shipped media? (I didn't see
RBD 8.0, but will check again)
Regarding my current 7.5.1 install of RDI SOA, when I bring up RBD, I do not
have the RSE perspective available, and when I bring up RDI, I don't have the
Servers perspective available. I'm hoping this will change when I do the 8.0
install.
(with all this said, I wish IBM / Rational would just go with a single product,
and just sell addon perspectives......RDI, RBD, RAD, RDP, RDI SOA.....did I miss
any? geeeesh!!)
Thanks,
Don

Don,
It sounds like you're installing from shipped media, which might be one of the
earliest releases of the Rdi-SOA package. As I recall, there was a JVM update
that occurred in the second or third service pack, that could cause trouble if
both Rdi and RBD were not updated at the same time. Originally, the problem was
that the JVM update for Rdi came out about two weeks before the RBD jvm update
was ready.
I have had more trouble with HATS than any other component, so far. I would
recommend that you keep your installation as lean as possible, if you can.
Somewhere along the line, Installation manager began showing pre-requisites for
HATS that were not found in my Rational SDP installation. I never figured out
why, but since we don't use HATS, I just began leaving it out of the install.
This is still WAY more complicated and fragile than it should be. Mystery
problems that only seem to plague one particular PC, random workspace
corruption. I'm still trying to figure out how to transfer my Rdi-SOA licenses
into RDP 8 for Cobol and RPG + RBD 8. IBM does NOT offer a direct replacement
of Rdi-SOA. Instead, they split your Rdi-SOA license into two. Passport
advantage... :-(
Honestly, it might be easiest to get upgrade media for RDP 8 and RBD 8, and
install those.

Sorry Joe, I confused the issue with throwing out the 8.0 in my post.
My current installation is all 7.5.1. I have RDI for SOA, which came with disks
for RDB & RDI, as well as HATS, and WAS 6.1 Test Environment. I first installed
the RBD, the 6.1 Test Environment, then when I began install for RDI, it forced
me to use a different install directory, and gave me 2 startup icons, 1 for RBD
and the other for RDI. So I assume I have 2 workbenches installed. I
would have thought that the install for RDI would have recognized that I already
had RDB installed and guided me to install the RDI into the RDB workbench.
But it did not, or I just missed it somewhere (twice, since I gave it 2 tries).
I brought up 8.0 because I do currently own RAD for Websphere 8.0 (but have not
yet installed it), and I just ordered RDP 8.0. I'm hoping that I can get
the two 8.0 products to install and play nice together into 1 workbench, as you
and everyone else seems to agree that it will do.
Thanks to everyone for your input,
Don

I'm not sure what all your issues were, Don, but Installation Manager
won't install different versions together (say, RBD 8 and RDI 7.5). If
you do install a component that is compatible with a previously
installed component, you will be able to install it into the same
"package group" (which is the IBM terminology for workbench, as far as I
can tell).
Please, though, note my previous caveat that RDP has some sort of
technical glitch that makes a multiple install approach fail. If you
install RDP8 first and then install RBD8 (or RAD8, from what I
understand), you end up with a workbench that won't load. You have to
either install RBD8 first and then install RDP8, or else install both
together.
Joe
The confusing thing for me, is that I tried reinstalling RBD& RDI with
combining them in mind. I installed RBD fine, but the Installation manager
still made me select a new target directory when installing RDI (which was
boxed
with RBD). This left me with 2 installs. It was not intuitive at all on how
to combine them.
My install paths were
D:\Program files\IBM\SDP (for RBD) and
D:\Program files\IBM\RDI (for RDI)
My current install is 7.5, but I do have RAD for Websphere 8.0 (does not
include
RSE), and just ordered RDP 8.0 (Passport Advantage Customer)
So am I assuming correctly that when I install RDP first, that it will later
prompt or allow me to install RAD into the same workbench (install directory)?
Thanks to everyone for their help and advice on this.

Could IBM possibly make this any more confusing?? Joe you did a great job
of explaining it but it still almost as clear as mud.

This is exactly correct. The idea behind the entire Rational delivery
mechanism is that you can buy separate components and then install them
together to create a workbench. For example, to enable the approximate
capabilities of the old WDSC you would install RDP and RAD together;
this gives you RPG development tools and Java EE development. The
RDi-SOA equivalent is an installation of RDP and RBD.
Note that you should also be able to install a second component into an
existing installation of another component. For example, installing RBD
into an existing RDP is (nearly) the same as installing them together,
although as Duane notes installing them together is probably faster.
You can also install fix packs at the same time; this is especially
helpful for network installs.
One caveat: there is currently a mismatch between RDP and RBD that will
NOT allow you to install RBD into RDP, although you can install RDP into
RBD or install them together. Well, technically you can install RBD
into RDP, but the workbench will not come up and you have to uninstall
RBD to get your RDP back. That should be fixed sometime in Q1.
Joe
Don;
Install RAD 8.0 and RDP 8.0 in the same software package group.
We have both RAD and RDP 8.0 repositories on the network, we point IM to
them and it installs both in one pass. Include the WAS servers you want
and any fix packs in the repositories and, IMO, the installation is faster
than doing each separately.
You end up with all the tools in one instance of RDP.
You will need to check with IBM how to license this.
