Actually the behavior you are seeing is the default and always has been as far as I can recall. Someone must have changed the base setting on yours.

There is no preference in the conventional sense - this is one of the ones where it is a window menu setting.

In the error list window on the very far top right hand side is a small white downward pointing triangle. This is the window menu and exists in most windows. Click on that - there are two settings that are relevant. "Show Severity" which controls whether info messages are included. "Messages" which is the one you want as it allows you to never insert the message, only insert the one for the current line, or insert all. There's also a setting for "Automatically Remove" which lets you decide when added error messages get removed.
