Writing RPGLE code with Eclipse or WDSC:

I want to write some code without a connection
to the i. I have used
Code/400 in the past and it works nicely. So I
decided to upgrade my
skills with Eclipse and WDSC.
Intuitive is not a word that comes to mind.

So far, I have not been able to use WDSC unless
I define a connection,
and with Eclipse all I can find to use is a text
editor, which is not
productive in any way.

What am I missing?

The iSeries Projects facility is roughly
equivalent to the CODE Projects tool for working
with source code offline.

However, there are simpler methods - if you don't
require the "management" that Projects provides.

1. For an existing source member, right click in
the Remote System Explorer (RSE) View. In the
context menu, select MAKE AVAILABLE OFFLINE. This
sets up a default Project for you.

2. Even simpler, Copy/Paste an existing source
member to a Windows directory of your choice. Use
the LOCAL connection in RSE to navigate to this
directory.

3. Creating a new piece of source code? Use the
LOCAL connection (above) to create a new file in
your Wndows directory - taking care to name it
with the suffix xxxxxx.RPGLE.

When editting a source member locally (on your
PC), you may be prompted for a System i
Connection, (for certain tasks such as populating
the OUTLINE View). Simply cancel the prompt.

Hope this helps,
Brian Parkins.
