Hi Jon,
I've tried this and all works as expected. When I issue the wrksplf
command the spoolfiles appear and when I hit enter in the green screen
it pops back to the last
command completed screen.

I've
not checked all their versions but they are 7004 and below. I
distinctly
remember being able to launch qshell before I upgraded to 7006.

In a class we were running this week two of the students had similar
problems just running tasks like WRKSPLF - the command was issued
(i.e. it shows up on the 5250 RSESVR screen as the last issued) but
the spool file display never appeared - the command just completed.
Other similar commands had the same effect.

Can you run regular commands through the server?
