Marie-line/Aaron,
WDSC and RDi are the PC packages. They run only on the PCs. Both of them
connect to the Host Servers on IBM i / i5OS / OS400. Commands are often
executed through a program in the QDEVTOOLS library named QRSEEXEC.
Whether you run WDSC or RDi will be irrelevant as far as connecting to the
machine.
As far as what comes with what, you get entitlements (that's IBM-speak for
licenses to use) the various products if you are already own them and have
a current SWMA (Software Maintenance Agreement). The number of
entitlements varies with the processor tier for which your WDS was
licensed. e.g., a P05 get's so 10 entitlements to ILE compilers, Heritage
(read OPM) compilers, ADTS (read SEU/PDM/RDA,etc.). You also are entitled
to use WDSC version 7. There is no entitlement to RDi.
When buying a new machine (or buying new licensing for development tools),
the tools are all sold with a minimum entitlement again depending on the
processor tier. But in this case, the minimum isn't saying that so many
entitlements come with the compiler. Instead it says if you buy the ILE
compilers, you have to buy so many user seats to the compiler. If you buy
RDi, I don't think there is a minimum entitlement--emphasis on *I don't
think*. That's the best of my understanding.
Yesterday I did receive an e-mail from George Farr clarifying a couple of
new announcements. If you buy a Power Systems 520 express for IBM i, you
get "a license of ILE, ADTS and OPM as well as RDi SOA for a price of
$2700". Also, there is now a trade-up from ADTS to RDi for customers with
a current SWMA. You can get RDi for a 40% discount off of the normal
$795. i.e., $477. Although the official announcement letter states you
need to contact your IBM representative for local charges.
At present, there is no trade up/upgrade/etc. from WDSC to RDi.
Also *FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND* the entitlement to RDi, will not be covered
under the standard SWMA. To stay current with RDi, you will need a
separate maintenance agreement. The entitlement may come with the first
12 months covered, but anything after that costs extra.

Re: [WDSCI-L] RDi licensing - single PC and multiple AS400's
I thought that a few seats were coming with the compilers,
and that you had to pay only for additional seats ?
If I'm wrong, then I have the same question...
As Aaron, I haven't migrated yet,
but if one of my customers buy a new system which comes with RDI,
will I still be able to use WDSC7 to connect to their machine ?
Thanks !

I have a customer asking me this question as I haven't upgraded to RDi
myself... yet.
If I buy a single license of RDi as a consultant, is there anything
that also needs to be purchased for all of the different AS400
machines I connect to? For example, right now I have customers that
DON'T use WDSC, but I can still connect to their machines just fine
with my WDSC install on my remote PC. I am hoping that all they
really need to have on the remote machines is the compilers.
Anybody?
