You ask, why do I need more than 4GB in a development box?

Well David hit the first issue, 4GB is the theoretical, not actual
limit.

My current XP machine has 2.5GB of RAM. The new machine will probably
have to be Vista, which uses significantly more memory for the OS
itself. That means if a go with 4GB, I will likely end up with about
the same amount of working RAM.
