I am scheduled to give a presentation here tomorrow on WDSc to hopefully
get it accepted and some developers working with it.
Rick - Do it anyway. WDSc is good for you and your fellow developers
regardless of what may happen to it down the road. Don't throw the baby out
with the bath water.
SEU is going nowhere and it won't be free, either, in the future. So, your
developers will have to switch down the road and yes, it _may_ cost money
when they do. But why throttle your productivity for the next "n" months
because of what we think will be the scenario will be later on?
I continued to teach and support CODE in the first few releases of WDSc
because I felt it was critical for folks to move forward - even knowing it
meant moving to something else again down the road. But at the time, I
didn't have the workstation to support WDSc and there weren't enough killer
features to make me shell out the money to get one.
When the killer features appeared, I upgraded - and, just for the purpose,
of course, it's no longer necessary to have the killer size workstation to
use them. Go figure - but I digress...
My point is - if you can be more productive today and for months to come
with WDSc, there is no reason not to adopt it now - today - immediately.
It's not completely clear yet what the pricing will be for the new tools and
also what entitlement existing shops will have for the tools - either now or
down the road.
By all means, we should all make our thoughts about what impact the
packaging and pricing changes will mean to our shops. You never know - maybe
IBM/Rational will listen and maybe some things could change as a result.
But I don't see any reason why the announcement of RDi should mean anyone
stops working to get WDSc productivity into a shop.
