Whenever I hear that IBM wants to give me platform independence, the
question begs "once I get there (to platform independence), then what will
we need IBM for?"
Choice.
Simply being able to select the best hardware platform for the project
instead of being locked on a given platform.
For us the best hardware platform is the one which runs our legacy
system, but I can develop on my PC with all the tools that I have and
know, and can then tune using the same tools directly on the AS/400.
If the user doesn't want the best, we can let a PC run the java stuff
but slower (due to network traffic).
