It may actually be better for the users if they do start charging for WDSC.
I hadn't thought about this. Very interesting thought. Competition is always good for keeping all involved parties on their toes. I am trying to envision who would be a good party to do this that wouldn't have a conflict of interest within their walls. Genexus came to mind as a company that would have the resources to accomplish such a task, but would they want to? I suppose if there was enough money there to be made. Linoma could be another vendor in that mix as they make programmer tooling (i.e. RPG Toolbox and Surveyor) Aaron Bartell http://mowyourlawn.com -----Original Message----- From: wdsci-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:wdsci-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Karl Childers Sent: Monday, March 26, 2007 8:52 AM To: Websphere Development Studio Client for iSeries Subject: Re: [WDSCI-L] George Farr declares feature specific pricing onhorizonfor WDSC The only reason the majority of people who use WDSC for RPG development today are using it is because it is included with the compilers. Take away that incentive and you will see usage drop to near nothing. I can't imagine many shops, small or large, paying a 3 or 4 hundred dollar per seat premium for WDSC when the green screen tools work well enough and do not cost extra. It may actually be better for the users if they do start charging for WDSC. Maybe then we will see some third-party products that blow WDSC out of the water. In any case, if they intend to start charging for the development environment then they should provide the compilers as part of the OS. Then charge x for PDM and x+y for WDSC and give people the choice of how much to spend.
