Because the backup and restore features for a library is (was when we
wrote this - been using it for at-lease 5 years), much better. Backup &
Restore from the IFS use to be pretty messy.

And yes - it works just fine. 15 developers over - say 5 years - no real
issues.

Why, oh why would you store a PC .ZIP file in a iSeries physical file?

I'm surprised it even works.

Using the IFS would be a much better idea.

We ZIP the folders into one file. Then use FTP to put it on
the System I.

If I remember - it's just
PUT pcfilename.zip Library/File

we put all of our stuff in one specific library.

it was written in Delphi. Then we also have a small portion
of it that
give a list box of files in the library, and then you can
also download
it. That way, if I'm on a new PC, or if I want a
Knowledgebase - I can
download the ZIP to my Local PC, and un-zip it there. I also
use it to
backup all of my client notes, and documentation, - stuff
like that also.

We also have it so that it will only backup the folders if
there have
been changes in there. So most developers, just start it
when they leave,
and if you want - it can shut down your PC when it's done.
That way stuff
is backed up every nigh.

Works for us.

Do you mean the IFS vs. a library? Or how are the PC
documents stored on
your iSeries? I am in the process of buying my first iSeries
by myself
and
it would be nice to be able to do the same thing.

Thanks,
Aaron Bartell

That's right Aaron. We also use a backup program like that.
Only we FTP
our
PC apps, and other things (GX Knowledge bases) from our PC's
to a System I
library. That way it get's archived with our standard
Disaster Recovery
procedures.

We wrote our own, but they are very nice type of programs to have.

You will HATE WDSC if you put your workspace on the network.
There is a
boat load of IO happening for nearly ever thing you do while
in RSE. I
know
because I backup my workspace to another computer using a tool called
SmartSync and it only transfers the changed files, and there
are a lot of
them each time it runs during the day.

BTW, SmartSync is an excellent (and cheap - $35) way to backup your
workspaces. I just put everything that would be a pain to lose in a
folder
called "My Projects" and then sync that entire folder to
another machine.
I
have been using it for a couple years now and am VERY
satisfied with it
(satisfied = it doesn't break and it isn't a pain in the
butt). The best
feature is you get to pick the time when it syncs. I sync
twice a day I
think.

Say, what happens to my workspace, when I lose my harddrive where my
workspace is stored. I guess I'm answering my own question,
put it on the
network?

Is that what most of you are doing?
