CPF7E2E - Incorrectly formed range expression

When debugging an rpgle program I can set breakpoints and monitor 
expressions.  I even used the monitor to change the value of a variable. 
However if I try to change this variable:
D Cmd             S          32702A   Varying
Change variable window says 1024

Then I get the message CPF7E2E - Incorrectly formed range expression.
Any attempts to modify any other variables then start getting the same 
message.  I have to exit the service entry point, ENDDBGSVR, STRDBGSVR etc 
to get back to where I can set the other variables.
