Oops, I misread your original question.

I did find that it's called the "prefix area", but haven't been able to 
figure out (yet) how to turn it off.

As Arnie would say: 'I'll be baaaack on this".

Peter,

Thanks for your reply.  The date area simply toggles the source date,
but doesn't affect those pesky line numbers.

Any other ideas?
