I've done a couple installs here, and it does get real quiet during that "applying updates" part (CD stops spinning, but I think the HD light was still blinking), but it does eventually move on. I think that horizontal candy cane kept spinning, though, so if yours stopped, maybe it really did lock up. I would recommend uninstalling as much as you can of what's there, then do the installation again and find something else to do for a while during the install.
