I wasn't talking about Subversion, I was talking about IBM's iSeries
Projects feature. I do not know how well it handles 1000's of items (I am
sure it does fine at a technical level), I just do not think the underlying
concept of the feature was intended for this. For example, there is no way
to structure the local source in folders of arbitrary name and depth which
I think you would need. And then there are the concepts such as push
changes that will not work well for the reasons you have run into.

Subversion/Subclipse can easily scale to projects of this size. I have
lead the team that ported Subversion to OS/400, and am also the project
owner for Subclipse, so I know both projects fairly well. :)
