If someone objects, then I will have to set something up. I do not really have any ideas for you on the performance problem. Are there a lot of spooled files that meet the filter criteria? Showing the filter in a table can sometimes be faster than expanding the tree, just because the Windows tree control is not fast at inserting lots of data. Have you tried a comparable WRKSPLF command?
