This is not normal behavior. You should always get an error log. Do you see a message about "Retrieving events file"?

Is this a new installation? Have you checked for required PTFs? have you installed the service packs? Maybe you don't have option 60 of 5722-WDS installed on the iSeries? What version do you have - use Help->About to see it.

Also, try a compile with prompt and verify that OPTION(*EVENTF) is set.
