I'm surprised that no one has answered this with what I was told yet.  This was 
that IBM changed the LPEX defaults to be like the CODE defaults (which in turn 
were supposed to make it 'like SEU', and which I for one never liked and always 
changed in CODE) in 5.1.2.  It's easily changed back.

Go to Window/Preferences, expand LPEX Editor, select User Key Actions, and 
enter Key - backSpace, Action - backSpace (the case is significant!).

While you're there, you may also want to put in delete, delete.  Do you already 
have enter, splitLine from the tutorial?
