As always, interesting stuff Vern! To add my bit to this interesting piece of trivia, das Fenster literally means the Window in German (pulling this from elementary school classes). So, literally de-window-ation :) Happy new years and wish you all the best! Elvis -----Original Message----- Subject: RE: [WDSCI-L] Happy New Year! i wondered about that, too. Maybe he means, get it OUT of Windows? BTW, the 30 years War was touched off by what is called the Defenestration of Prague (1618). A couple vice-regents of the Austrian emperor were thrown out a window in the castle in Prague, over an issue of religious freedom. Britannica says they were not severely injured (the first such action in the 1400s had a number of people thrown onto some sharp spikes). That is a nice way of saying it - one source says they were thrown into a ditch, another that they were thrown into a pile of garbage, mostly straw, that had collected in the moat. But where did used straw come from, eh? So this looks like a Czech tradition - what's your heritage, Joe? ;-) At 07:05 AM 1/2/2005, you wrote: > > And to usher in the new year, I have a new tagline... > > > > Joe > > > > -- Defenestrate WDSC! > >Throw it out the window? > >-- >Jeff Crosby >jlcrosby@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx >Opinions expressed are mine only and not necessarily the views of my >company.
