If you take away the backward compatibility, you have an OS Like Windows where you have to rewrite your applications every time you upgrade. This would be the death toll for the iSeries. As others have pointed out, and others will certainly disagree, I think one of the biggest problems with the AS/400 is the backward compatibility. If one can run programs written in RPG/II for a System/3 on the latest i5 running i5/OS...people will. The AS/400 community is not one to embrace change - that's why you have 15,000+ objects and 35 programmers stuck in the 80s. And as Paul mentioned, that's why management moves to Windows... > -------- Original Message -------- > Subject: RE: [WDSCI-L] Some obvious questions on WDSci ? > From: "Dijk, Bas v" <bvdijk@xxxxxxxxx> > Date: Thu, September 02, 2004 8:08 am > To: "Websphere Development Studio Client for iSeries" > <wdsci-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx> > > Guys, guys, I fully agree on the outdated part but let me explain: > > - Currently we use LANSA for development > - The 'old' stuff is done in RPG/400 (or older), we are talking about > 15.000+ objects > - Totaly re-writing to LANSA simply takes far to much time so we have to > live with RPG/400 for the old stuff > - Whenever a change or bugfix has something to do with old code we > simply try to determine which takes more time: > - Change the old code, or > - Re-write in LANSA > - The main reasons for NOT converting the RPG/400 stuff to RPG/IV is: > - this would mean re-educate 35 people for RPG/IV (I would then > personally chose C ) > - We start to work with yet another language which does not realy > improve transparency > > Again: I fully agree on converting, but how do I convince 35 people to > learn RPG/IV? > > BTW: Michael, I don't think I will be able to deal with it!
