Like Joe, I'm kind of curious as to *why* we can't change icons.  The
developers in my shop have commented negatively about the fact that all the
icons look alike.

You cannot change the icon for a perspective.  Nor can you delete a 
perspective.  Hopefully, the Eclipse people will get to this someday.
