This becomes a design issue. Designing for 1024 only delays your inevitable
decision to use the techniques you see in Mac, Windows, and most websites.
Design vertically, not horizontally. Use links, lots of sub pages, and
avoid trying to solve the problem by mandating minimum screen resolutions or
using miniscule fonts. A very useful exercise now that you've seen the
problem is to surf other commercial sites and see how they did. It really
is a whole new design paradigm.

We have done quite a bit of WebFacing type work on existing apps and went
with a default screen resolution of 1024 x 768. We determined that it was
just too hard to fit things horizontally as you mentioned. Basically we
determined that we wanted zero use of a horizontal scroll bar and as little
as possible the vertical.

Subject: [WDSCI-L] Screen resolution

Greeting all,

What screen resolution are most users using for Webfacing programs?
We recently did a demo of a webfacing project to a set of our users, and
the screen resolution on the PC we used was 800 x 600. Does Webfacing
recommend something large like 1024 x 768? I noticed that one web pages
that we had to use the horizontal scroll bar at the bottom of the web
page to see some of the fields that were on the right of the screen.
Several of the users complained that they did not like that they had to
do that. Is the only way to get around this problem is to change the
screen resolution size?
