Part of it I would guess is that the technology is far more mature - having evolved from the VAJava tools. Another factor would be the fact that Java is an interpreted language and it has to be easier to adapt that to maintain a constant awareness of the state of the program than it is to adapt conventional compiler technology which has a completely different modus operandi.
