As fas as I know, WebFacing still supports WAS 4.0. When you create the
WebFacing project you simply have to inidcate that you want to create a
J2EE 1.2 project, as opposed to 1.3. There is also some configuration
changes you have to make on the WAS server, it is just a simple change to
tell it to use a certain character encoding. In WAS 5.0, they are able to
use the J2EE 1.3 feature of filters to do this programmatically without
configuring the server.

To answer your other question, there was a time that has now expired, that
IBM would let you upgrade from the free WAS 3.5 Standard Edition to WAS
5.0 Express. If you have no need for EJB's in WAS 4.0, you might be able
to twist the right arms at IBM to get a similar upgrade. Otherwise, WAS
Express is $2500, although I think they also have a per user option of
like $50/user.

Subject
[WDSCI-L] WAS server - Free or chargeable?

A coworker is working on a web facing project (WDSc 5.0.1) and has
discovered that our WAS server version is 4.0 and web facing won't work
with this version of the WAS server. Our operations department is telling
us that IBM wants to charge for the current version of the WAS server.

My question is this, those of you that are using web facing, is there a
no-charge WAS server or did you have to pay to upgrade to the 5.0 version?
If there is a no-charge server how do we get it?
